The shareware font I used (and registered) to create the symbols
in this tutorial is called American Indian
Any dingbat or text font will work equally as well. Medium to thick fonts are best.
I used this woodgrainas the fill pattern for my images.
You can download this one or use one of your own. The woodgrain you use needs to be medium to dark in color as the cutout part of the button or banner will be lightened.
STEP 1.
Choose for your foreground color: Red 216 Green 139 Blue 88 or #D88B58
Choose for your background color: Red 156 Green 67 Blue 7 or #9C4307
STEP 2.
Open the woodgrain image you downloaded or use one of your own
STEP 3.
Open a new image![]()
WIDTH: 300 HEIGHT: 300 PIXELS
RESOLUTION: 72
BACKGROUND: WHITE
16 MILLION COLORS
(You can resize using maintain aspect ratio when image is complete)
STEP 4.
Fillthe new image using these settings:
FILL STYLE: PATTERN
(Make sure you choose your woodgrain image for the pattern)
MATCH MODE: NONE
TOLERANCE: 55
OPACITY: 100
STEP 5.
Apply Buttonize effect ("Image | Special Effects | Buttonize")
HEIGHT: 30 WIDTH: 30 OPACITY: 62
TRANSPARENT EDGE CHECKED
(These settings can be changed to give the effect you want for your finished image)
STEP 6.
Choose the selectiontool
APPLY A RECTANGLE SHAPED SELECTION
COORDINATES: 45,45 DRAG TO 250,250
SELECTIONS: UNCHECK FLOAT
STEP 7.
Apply BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST ("Colors | Adjust | Brightness/Contrast")
BRIGHTNESS: 15%
CONTRAST: 0%

DO NOT RELEASE SELECTION
STEP 8.
Apply a Cutout effect ("Image | Special Effect | Cutout")
LEAVE THE FILL INTERIOR WITH COLOR BOX UNCHECKED
SELECT BLACK FOR SHADOW COLOR
OPACITY: 78
BLUR: 12
VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL: 2

STEP 9.
Choose Drop Shadow effect ("Image | Special Effects | Drop Shadow")
COLOR: FOREGROUND COLOR
OPACITY: 100
BLUR: 1
VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL: 1
(This step adds a little depth to the image)
STEP 10.
Release Selection ("Selections | Select None")
NOW WE'RE READ FOR THE TEXT
STEP 11.
Choose thetool
CLICK IN THE CENTER OF YOUR IMAGE WITH THE TEXT TOOL
SELECT FONT
BOLD
SIZE: 72
SELECT "CENTER" "ANTIALIAS" & UNSELECT "FLOATING"
TYPE IN TEXT (DINGBAT)
APPLY YOUR TEXT OR DINGBAT
WITH TEXT STILL SELECTED
STEP 12.
Apply a Cutout effect ("Image | Special Effect | Cutout")
USING THE SAME SETTINGS AS FOR THE RECTANGLE SELECTION (*Step 8*) ABOVE
(If you're planning on resizing any smaller that 150X150
It would be a good idea to change the blur setting to a higher number for this step)

STEP 13.
Change foreground color: red 232, green 170 and blue 128 or #E8AA80
STEP 14.
Apply Drop Shadow effect ("Image | Special Effects | Drop Shadow")
COLOR: FOREGROUND COLOR
OPACITY: 100
BLUR: 0
VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL: 1
(Again, this step adds depth)
Deselect Text, resize or resample if needed, Save As and Enjoy!
